Jewish Tour--Jewish Amsterdam
Our friendly local Amsterdam host invites you to come visit Mokum!
(‘Amsterdammers’ informally refer to their city as ‘Mokum.’)
Usage of the word Mokum (from Makom in Hebrew, meaning ‘Place’) dates back to the end of the 16th century when Jews, fleeing from the Spanish Inquisition, sought refuge and a safe place to live. Amsterdam was a city in expansion and relatively tolerant. Jews were invited to build a new life and to settle on the perimeters of the growing city. Its meaning indicates that the new arrivals found their new home to be a safe place.
Your traveljewish host in Amsterdam looks forward to welcoming you to ‘Mokum’ and making you feel at home!
